Marine Maintenance Tip #2: don’t overlook oil condition monitoring in slow-speed 2-stroke engines
16 / 07 / 2026
Large slow-speed 2-stroke marine engines generally use two different lubricants:
- A system oil for bearings and crankshaft components
- A cylinder oil injected onto the cylinder liners
Regular oil analysis helps verify:
- Water or contamination in the system oil
- Wear of piston rings and cylinder liners
- Neutralization of acids produced during heavy fuel combustion
- Whether the cylinder oil BN matches the sulfur level of the fuel
Without proper monitoring, the risks are significant: acid corrosion, liner polishing, and loss of sealing between rings and liners.
In these engines, oil analysis also helps optimize cylinder lubrication feed rates, improving both reliability and operating costs.
